More About Melatonin – NIH

Remember a couple of weeks ago when Dr. Rob put together a couple of wonderful resources (like this blog and this video), detailing the different supplements that can help support the immune system in the face of COVID-19? One of those highly recommended supplements was Melatonin.

Why are we calling special attention to this?

The US National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health recently published on article about how Melatonin is a potential adjuvant treatment for COVID-19. You can click the link for the full story, but here’s a summary of what they had to say:

There are several things that evidence suggests contribute to COVID-19 pathology, including “excessive inflammation, oxidation, and an exaggerated immune response.” Melatonin is protective, then, in the sense that it is an anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative molecule.

Other Ways Melatonin Helps

Not only might melatonin help as an anti-inflammatory and anti-oxident, it is also well known to calm anxiety and improve sleep quality. We know from all sorts of studies that stress and lack of sleep (or poor sleep) have a detrimental effect on the immune system. You can read more about managing stress with self care and improving sleep on our blog.

The article leaves us with a very powerful statement: “There is significant data showing that melatonin limits virus-related diseases and would also likely be beneficial in COVID-19 patients.” That being said, this can be a very impactful supplement not just against COVID-19, but for other virus-related disease, as well.
