Preparing the Body for Birth, Naturally

Did you know that chiropractic can be extremely helpful in pregnancy? Not just for dealing with the aches and pains brought on by growing a human, but also for preparing the body for delivery.

Maiya, who delivered her second child about a month ago, attributes her chiropractic care with Dr. Jon as one of the reasons she was able to forego any medications or interventions during labor.

“My husband and I originally started functional medicine care at Valeo care in 2021, so luckily, we were already familiar with the office by the time I was pregnant. During my pregnancy, I started to have bad back pain, and just a rough time overall. I was sick all the time—both pregnancy and non-pregnancy related—which was difficult, especially while caring for a toddler,” Maiya explains. “Eventually I also developed hip pain, and at about 28 weeks (about 6 and a half months) pregnant, I decided to pursue chiropractic care to see if it could help.”

Maiya had heard wonderful things about Dr. Jon Toftoy, particularly his prenatal work, and decided to get on his schedule.

“Leading up to my first appointment, every time I got up to walk my hip would hurt so bad. But after the first visit, my hip pain was GONE. I had never experienced such instant results before,” Maiya shares. “After that, I started going weekly to keep on top of my back pain. I got to the point where I rarely had back pain… and I didn’t experience the hip pain ever again after that first appointment.”

The Big Day

With her first child, Maiya received an epidural and had a very difficult recovery. “My first labor ended in a 3rd degree tear, and it felt like it took months to recover. Afterward, I heard learned that a natural, unmedicated birth can lead to an easier recovery, so I knew I wanted to try for that this second time around,” she says. “And I did it!”

Although Maiya’s success with an unmedicated delivery was likely influenced by a combination of factors, she feels that chiropractic played a significant role, helping to keep her body aligned and structurally prepared for the baby’s descent.

“This labor was a completely different experience than my first,” Maiya says. “It felt so much better. I was able to go on walks almost immediately. Chiropractic had helped so much leading up to delivery that I came back about two weeks postpartum, and both my newborn and I got adjusted. Dr. Jon said everything looked great and that we do not need to be back too often.”

Many people are surprised when they hear a chiropractor say they can go a while before getting adjusted again, but at Valeo, our goal is to get you feeling better to the point where you can go several weeks or months between appointments!

Experience with Dr. Jon

Needless to say, Maiya was very pleased with her experience with Dr. Jon.

“He’s just a really good person,” she says. “My husband came with a few times, and Dr. Jon is so personable and takes the time to get to know you as a patient, but also as a person. He got to know my daughter, too, which was so nice. At typical doctor’s appointments, she’d be ‘in the way’ but at Valeo, Dr. Jon would talk to her, play with her… he’s so fun and warm and it’s nice to feel good about bringing my family. We just love Valeo… the company, what it stands for… we love it there!”
