Recovering from the Red, White, and Blues

4th of July treats
Too many 4th of July treats?

Having a hard time recovering after your holiDAY turned holiday weekend? Over-indulging on food and beverage that’s always within reach on the 4th of July is easy to do. This can lead to bloating, inflammation, joint pain, or feeling physically drained and mentally defeated for not having made better choices.

What are some of the ways you can help yourself recover?

  1. Hydrate. The 4th is usually spent outside with an adult beverage (or a few), which can lead to dehydration. Aim to drink half of your body weight in ounces (or a little more) to re-hydrate.
  2. Get good sleep. Did those fireworks and late nights prevent a full night of rest? Catch back up. Make sure you get to bed at a reasonable time. You can learn more about sleep and a few other tips to improve your sleep quality here.
  3. Help your body detoxify. Follow a program like the ClearVite Cleanse to help support your liver and detoxification pathways. The most common results reported are increased physical and mental energy, decreased gas and bloating, and weight loss. We’ve even seen patients decrease their cholesterol! Also, it sets the stage for eating nutritious, healthy meals for the weeks to come. Get friends and family to join you!
  4. Get an adjustment. Especially if you went tubing, snoozed in a less-than-ideal position, or drove a long distance to and from the cabin. The spinal cord partially makes up the nervous system, which controls all body function. Make sure your spine is in correct alignment to help your body function at its best.
  5. Get a massage. Massage is great on many levels. It helps to relax sore muscles and increases lymphatic flow, which helps your body to detoxify. A massage with Michelle also promotes emotional release, in case your holiday wasn’t as stress-free as you had hoped.
  6. Support with supplements. Depending on your post-holiday symptoms, it can be handy to support your body with supplements. Don’t guess and check here – ask what Dr. Aaron or Dr. Rob recommends at your next visit.
  7. Make a plan and stick to it. If you are having a hard time “getting back on the wagon”, meet with Elizabeth, our functional medicine health coach. Having someone hold you accountable and provide education and support makea a world of difference in your ability to move forward with your goals.
