Putting the Back in ‘Back in Action’

Dr. Jon Toftoy with Tim at Valeo's Patient Appreciation Event

How do you know you have a satisfied patient? There’s probably a few ‘tells’ but one is that they LOVE to talk about their care!

“Dr. Jon is one of my favorite topics!” exclaims Tim, and it’s no wonder. After speaking with him about his experience, we can’t help but have a greater appreciation for Dr. Jon being a part of our team than before… and we were already highly appreciative.

From Pained Pedalist to Pleased Patient

Tim’s story starts almost two decades ago.

“I had been struggling with back pain for about eight years before seeing Dr. Jon,” explains Tim, an avid bicyclist. “It had gotten progressively worse, and my back would seize up after rides. In 2013, it was so bad that when racing in the state championship, I couldn’t finish because the pain was so intense. I have never NOT finished a race until then. I knew something had to change. It was after that experience that I started seeing Dr. Jon.”

Tim had seen a different chiropractor before Dr. Jon but for several reasons, his experience fell a bit flat and he felt that they were just trying to sell more and more services.

“When I met Dr. Jon, it felt different,” shares Tim, “He explained how chiropractic care worked in a way I easily understood it. And I also never felt like he was selling anything. It always felt like my health and best interest was all he cared about. It was a refreshing and phenomenal feeling.”

Tim was impressed with Dr. Jon’s care from the start, so much so, that almost a decade later, he still sees Dr. Jon for regular chiropractic care.

“On top of everything else, I was really drawn to Dr. Jon as a practitioner because he is an absolute superstar in cycling. Having someone at that level encourage you and tell you that you can do it, reinforcing the good things you’re doing, and telling you that you’ll be able to do what you love is so amazing… just that he would care enough about me to actually listen and work so hard to make sure I can keep doing something that brings me joy,” says Tim, adding, “It’s always nice to have someone who understands where you’re coming from, especially with cycling, because it’s different than normal athletic activities.

How Tim Got Back Into Action

Dr. Jon’s care went beyond simple adjustments to help get Tim back to where he needed to be to fully enjoy cycling.

Tim Biking Without Pain“He was unbelievably encouraging and had a lot of different recommendations, in addition to adjustments, and ideas of what I could and should do differently on the bike to alleviate and prevent the pain,” shares Tim. “From stretches, to exercises, to bike adjustments… he was very knowledgeable on actions I could take to prevent the inflammation in my back that was causing the seizing.”

Luckily, with these adjustments and recommendations, it didn’t take Tim long to see a drastic change. “I started seeing improvement immediately,” tells Tim. “After my first visit with Dr. Jon, I went home and thought, ‘Oh wow! This doesn’t hurt anymore.’ Fast forward to today, and I don’t think about back pain anymore. It’s been several years that I haven’t had to worry about it.”

Upping the Game

“My experience with Dr. Jon has been so amazing because he does more than treat the body… he treats the mental and emotional, too.” Tim explains.

“A lot of times when you have an injury and feel like you can’t do what you used to do, it can be discouraging. But Dr. Jon does wonderfully at providing encouragement and letting you know what you can do to get back to doing what you love. He provided me with a training plan—things to work on —to build confidence to succeed in my sport. I feel like I’m still upping my game every year because Dr. Jon can address mental hurdles as well as physical hurdles!”

But that’s not where Tim’s admiration of Dr. Jon’s care ends.

“Being a Christian, having somebody that has a similar faith and understands me from that angle as well ‘upped the game’ with my experience, too. I’ve referred friends who aren’t Christians to the clinic, as well, but was unsure what they would think since Valeo is so faith-forward. However, I’ve heard back from them that they loved being prayed over, something Dr. Jon does at the end of each adjustment. They were blown away that he would care enough to pray over them!”
